Get Frocked: Vintage Sailor Dresses

Ahoy fashionistas! Sailing in SecondLife™ is great fun for many of us, so this week I’ll write about two adorable vintage sailor dresses I recently found.

Sailor tops and dresses became popular during the war in the 1940’s, often paired with “Victory” red lipstick. Maroon and other dark shades of lipstick were popular as well.

The first dress, “Sail Away”, is a vintage 1950s full-skirted sundress from Ingenue. The dress is available in three colors: Red, white and blue. I purchased red because I like the way it is set off with the white trim.

Each skirt features a row of small sailboats along the hemline. On my dress, the sailboats are white, to match the white trim on the bodice.

What really makes the dress stand out is the wide blue & white pin-striped bow (red and white pin-stripes grace the bows on the white and blue dresses.) The bow ties around the hips, emphasizing the narrow waist, while miniature bows decorate the straps at the shoulders.

The outfit comes with two versions of the skirt, unscripted and a smart skirt, which is adjustable.

Ingenue's Sail Away

The second sailor dress I purchased was “Royal Navy” from JetDoll. This nautically themed dress was inspired by 1940’s fashion. It’s a nice shade of cornflower blue, with a single white anchor decorating the sleeveless top. The skirt comes to mid-thigh length, making this a fun outfit to wear.

Small hats were popular in the 1940’s and this outfit doesn’t disappoint — a tiny blue sailor cap with a matching white anchor gives the outfit a cute crowning touch.
