Get Frocked: 1920’s Gin Dress

By Eowyn Atlass

Shopping for a vintage 1920’s gown in Second Life can be exciting as there are many choices.  And just like the women of the 1920’s who embraced the new, pretty but more comfortable clothing styles, I love the styles that came about during that decade.

I wanted a dress that had the flavor of the period, but that wasn’t so drastic a change from my normal wardrobe that I couldn’t wear it to my favorite modern nightclubs.  I figured when I saw the right outfit I would know it.

One day while visiting Caledon Eyre, I came across Kleineschwein Designs main store.  I love the 19th century Steampunk Victorian Caledon Sims.  When I visit there I always feel like I’ve stepped back in time, and this is especially true now while Caledon Eyre is decorated in an old-fashioned holiday theme.  And Kleineschwein Designs fits right in.  At Kleineschwein, you can find fashion from a variety of eras, all the way from the Baroque and Rococo periods to the 1940’s.

After exploring the store for a while I found what I’d been looking for.  The 1920’s Gin Dress.  This dress would fit right in at a 1920’s speakeasy, a themed ball, or a tea party, but it could also pass for a modern dress.  For example, it would be the perfect outfit to wear for a night out at one of Second Life’s great jazz clubs.

Made up of ocean-colored silk, the dress has a sleeveless V-necked top which has a subtle lace design that dips down from the neckline.  A fabric belt of gathered silk is worn around the waist over the straight skirt with your choice of either a long, floor-length overskirt, a cocktail-length fishtail overskirt, or you can wear the mid-calf length straight skirt on its own or with a silk flounce along the bottom hem.  I purchased the dress in Ocean, but it is also available in Marmalade and Slate.

The variety of looks you can achieve with the different skirt pieces is what drew me to this outfit.  It enabled me to wear the dress to all sorts of venues.  I tried different combinations of the dress out at places as diverse as Flashmans 1920’s Ceci N’est pas un Club downbeat hangout, the Two Falls 1920’s Tea Room, and the elegant Bubbly Nightclub, and felt right at home at all three.
